Chapter 3

Kathy wrenched her arm out of Jake’s grip. “What? You think I did this?”

“Mom,” Jake pleaded, “of course not. I’m saying the police might think so if you’re talking like that. Can’t you hear what ‘I know he didn’t do this’ could sound like? You’re lucky they haven’t looked at you already, seeing as how you had… history with Eoghan.”

Kathy cooled by a degree. “Alright. Fine… I’ll go tell them in a different way.” She strode off after the retreating detectives.

“Mom!” Jake called, then followed her, and Violet had no choice but to tag along behind them.

“Detectives,” Jake called before his mother could say anything. “I’m Jake Whitehouse, a former MP investigator. I think you need to pause and hear more of what this group has to say. We don’t think Liam poisoned Eoghan.”

“It was Liam who identified the cause of death in the first place!” Kathy said. “Why would he do that if he was the one who laced his drink with it?”

“Methanol is in liquor, right?” the shorter detective said. “That’s why we’re arresting the brewer. It was his bar, or pub, or tent, where the victim was having drinks before the show, he doesn’t pour off his methanol, and we were told he hated the man.”

“Exactly!” Kathy insisted. “That’s exactly how you can tell that he didn’t do this.”

Violet wasn’t sure she agreed, but she decided it was in her own best interest to keep quiet for now. A long silence stretched while both detectives looked perplexed, then looked at each other.

“Um,” the tall detective said, “is there a place we can sit down?”
